Artist Spotlight: Christian Marclay in SF!

Two years ago, I was fortunate enough to attend and write about the Venice Biennale where Christian Marclay’s 24 hour video installation The Clock de-bued. WOW. I was blown away  and so was everyone else as it took home the prestigious “Golden Lion” award which essentially is a best of show chosen from of all the artwork and countries represented. Now on view at SFMOMA  until June 2nd, The Clock can be seen as well as a series of Marclay’s photographs at the Fraenkel Gallery. These venues are only blocks apart – don’t miss it! – Erika

SFMOMA writes “Christian Marclay’s celebrated video installation The Clock (2010) is composed of thousands of film clips referencing the time of day, intricately edited into a 24-hour-long montage that matches real time minute for minute — a tour de force of appropriation that is also a functioning timepiece. Marclay has been known since the late 1970s for his highly crafted remixes of time-based media, from vinyl records and tape loops to digital video. He spent three years assembling this staggering work, piecing together fragments from films both famous and obscure. The result, awarded the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2011, is a dazzling, genre-defying distillation of movie history, a radical reflection on cinematic duration, and a reminder that time waits for no one. Clock-watching has never been so mesmerizing.”

Fraenkel Gallery is pleased to announce Things I’ve Heard, an exhibition of color photographs by artist and composer Christian Marclay. Comprised of approximately fifty works spanning the years 1994 to 2009, Things I’ve Heard will be accompanied by a fully illustrated book published by Fraenkel Gallery in association with Paula Cooper Gallery.

Photography has been an integral element of Marclay’s practice since his earliest years as an artist. With an eye keenly (and paradoxically) attuned to sound-related subject matter, his photographs function both as source material for his works in other media as well as sophisticated, subtle works of art on their own terms. With an appearance of casual snapshots, Marclay’s photographs evidence a keen awareness of the history of the medium, particularly of Atget, Evans, and Eggleston. His travels have provided the artist with a rich array of sound-related subject matter; a bin of second-hand record albums in Michigan, a marching band outside a window in London, a painted ear on a brick wall in Montreal, a “Honk If You Love Silence” bumper sticker in Chicago, for example. While Marclay has exhibited small groupings of his photographs in the past, this is the first exhibition dedicated solely to his camera-related photography.

Christian Marclay is widely recognized as one of the most adventurous artists of his generation. “The Clock,” his 24-hour film comprised of thousands of time-related clips from the history of cinema, has attracted viewers around the globe, and will be on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art from April 6th through June 2nd, 2013.

Marclay lives and works in New York and London. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Metropolitan Museum of American Art, New York, Tate Modern, London, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and many others. Things I’ve Heard is his third one-person exhibition at Fraenkel Gallery.
